Ephesus is a city of colossal monuments and marble-columned roads, one of the most complete, still-standing Roman cities in the Mediterranean region near the mouth of the Menderes River. Pamukkale is most pleasant once the crowds of summer have departed, but temperatures have not yet plummeted. The vast and rambling ruins of Roman Hierapolis, an ancient spa town, lie on the top of this calcite hill, providing another reason to visit.

And the word “Sumela” is known to have derived from the word “melas”, which means black in English. The reason why this name was given to the monastery is believed to be associated with the black portraits of the Virgin Mary or the Black Mountains.
